Asking, “Is this all there is?” As an architect, I have worked to move past my own roadblocks of balancing motherhood, eldercare, a demanding job. What carried me through was my passion. Because to me, being an architect is truly a vocation. I get so excited doing research on how people are affected by the built environment, connecting with my clients, working to learn about their unique culture and pain points so I can provide them an innovative design that will not only make them feel better but enhance what they need to do in each space.
I’m committed to making the world a better place one project at a time. But it wasn’t until I overcame my need to prove my worth and be all things to all people that I was able to beat the overwhelm and stress and truly thrive. Now I do work I love, with the resources I need while still having time to pick my son up from cross country practice at 5:00 pm.
If I can figure this out, so can you. I’m not lucky to have the career I do today. It’s a result of my taking action to build a career a wanted instead of one I got by default. Struggles deplete us, but challenges feed us. Learn how to recognize the difference between time investing and time-wasting opportunities. Creativity is cyclical, and each part of the process is necessary for growth. I will specifically discuss the mindset of lack that so many creative people can get stuck in and how to overcome it by embracing where you are in your creative cycle so that you can move forward.
